Civil Liberties Luminary Nadine Strossen To Step Down As ACLU President (5/16/2008)
NEW YORK - After almost 18 years of distinguished service as President of the American Civil Liberties Union, Nadine Strossen has announced that she will step down this year. Strossen, the first woman ever to lead the ACLU, is one of today's most well known and respected civil liberties leaders. During her tenure as president, the ACLU has continued its role as a tireless defender of constitutional freedoms in the face of unrelenting threats.

Washington Legislative Office Hires New State Legislative Counsel (3/13/2008)
WASHINGTON – The American Civil Liberties Union recently welcomed Larry Frankel as the new State Legislative Counsel for the Washington Legislative Office. Frankel oversees the WLO State Legislative Department, which provides support to the 53 ACLU affiliate offices across the country. The State Legislative Department bolsters the ACLU’s work in state legislatures by analyzing legislation, providing background research, offering legislative strategy and acting as a liaison between policy experts and ACLU state lobbyists working on the ground.

ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri Hires New Executive Director (11/26/2007)
KANSAS CITY, MO – The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri has hired Dan Winter as its new executive director. Winter, who will begin work Dec. 17, will lead the staff, volunteers and board of directors in efforts to protect every person’s civil rights throughout the region.

ACLU Announces Publication of Administration of Torture, a Groundbreaking Account of Prisoner Abuse in U.S. Custody Abroad (10/22/2007)
NEW YORK - The American Civil Liberties Union and Columbia University Press today announce the publication of Administration of Torture: A Documentary Record from Washington to Abu Ghraib and Beyond. Written by ACLU attorneys Jameel Jaffer and Amrit Singh, the book presents a detailed account of the treatment of prisoners held in U.S. detention centers in Afghanistan , Iraq , and Guantánamo Bay. Based on thousands of government documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, the book supplies substantial evidence that the torture and abuse of prisoners was systemic and resulted from decisions made by senior U.S. officials, both military and civilian.

Texas Youth Commission Taps Veteran ACLU of Texas Leader as Ombudsman (5/10/2007)
AUSTIN, TX – The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas announced today that Executive Director William C. Harrell will be appointed Ombudsman of the newly restructured Texas Youth Commission. Harrell has served as Executive Director of the ACLU of Texas, the eighth largest ACLU affiliate in the nation, for the past 7 years.
