Bio

Kamara Jones serves as the Deputy Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for the ACLU. In this capacity, she oversees the organization’s marketing channels, issue area program communications, and internal and affiliate communications.

Kamara joined the ACLU in 2024. She has an extensive background in public service, including politically appointed roles for two presidential administrations. She has led communications for cabinet-level agencies; Congressional committees, caucuses, members, candidates; and change-agents. Most recently, Kamara served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) – the second highest ranking public affairs role at the department – where she co-led a 75-person public affairs division with a $55 million budget responsible for media relations, social media, speechwriting, digital, FOIA, operations, and a multi-million dollar COVID-19 public education campaign.

Kamara’s additional experience in the public sector includes roles serving as Communications Director for the Congressional Black Caucus and the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC), Press Secretary for U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, and Press Secretary for the U.S. General Services Administration. While serving as the Director of Communications and Outreach at the JEC, she led the committee in developing and drafting The Cost of Police Misconduct Act, as well as the communications plan for the legislation.

In the private sector, Kamara worked at a strategic communications firm that primarily worked with nonprofits and foundations. Earlier in her career, she was a reporter and copy editor at newspapers across Missouri and for Essence magazine.

A native of Missouri, Kamara has a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri and a Master of Arts in African American Studies from The Ohio State University. She is based in Washington, DC.
