ACLU of Florida Sues Miami Officials for Blocking Human Rights Protest at Free Trade Meeting (06/27/2006)
MIAMI - The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida today filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Amnesty International USA, charging that city and police officials prevented members of the human rights organization from exercising their constitutional right to assemble and protest, despite having obtained proper permits.

ACLU Praises Senators for Rejecting Flag Amendment, Says Bill of Rights Stands Strong and Intact (06/27/2006)
WASHINGTON – The American Civil Liberties Union today applauded the Senate for rejecting a proposed Constitutional amendment to ban flag “desecration.” The amendment, S.J. Res. 12, fell one vote short of the two-thirds majority required for passage.

ACLU of Florida Sues to Stop Book Censorship by Miami-Dade County School Board (06/21/2006)
MIAMI -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, Greater Miami Chapter, today filed a lawsuit against the Miami-Dade County School Board challenging the removal and banning of a series of children’s books, including the hotly debated Vamos a Cuba (A Visit to Cuba), from the public school’s library system.

Virginia Judge Allows Signs Critical of Local Officials (06/19/2006)
RICHMOND, VA – The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia today announced a victory for free speech after a Chesterfield County Circuit Court judge ruled that a homeowner who posted two large signs in his yard criticizing local government officials did not violate the county’s sign ordinance.

Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Flag Amendment, ACLU Urges Full Senate to Reject Limits on First Amendment Rights (06/15/2006)
WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union today expressed its disappointment as the Senate Judiciary Committee approved an election-year proposal to include censorship in the Constitution. The full Senate is now expected to consider S.J. Res. 12, the "Flag Desecration Amendment," the week of June 26.

MIAMI -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida today expressed disappointment over the Miami-Dade School Board’s decision to censor the book, “Vamos a Cuba,” from public schools.

ACLU to House: Don't Block Constituent Email (06/13/2006)
WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union today denounced a move by the House Chief Administrative Officer to use so-called "logic puzzles" to limit the ability of constituents to e-mail their Representatives. According to the Washington Post and Roll Call, the House Administration Committee found that on one day alone, of 8,262 visits to Web sites for citizens to contact members, only 1,568 messages were actually sent.

ACLU of Virginia Challenges Ban on Alcohol-Related Advertising in College Publications (06/08/2006)
RICHMOND, VA - The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia today filed a federal lawsuit against the State Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control charging that its restrictions on alcohol-related advertisements in college publications are unconstitutional. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Collegiate Times and The Cavalier Daily, student-run newspapers at Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia, respectively.

WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union today praised the First Amendment Center for hosting a lively and thoughtful debate on the proposed Constitutional amendment to outlaw flag desecration. The Senate is expected to hold a vote on the proposal during the last week of June.

In Landmark Florida Case, ACLU Preserves Right of Students Not to Recite Pledge (06/01/2006)
WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida today applauded a district court ruling striking down a state law requiring students to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The pledge will continue to be recited in public school classrooms, but the unconstitutional practice of forcing all students to stand and recite the pledge will be halted.

NYCLU Will Assist with FBI Investigation into NYPD's Arrests of Convention Protesters (05/17/2006)
NEW YORK - The FBI has asked the New York Civil Liberties Union to assist in a criminal civil rights investigation into the New York City Police Department's arrest of protesters during the Republican National Convention.
