Our Values Aligned

Thousands of ACLU supporters have chosen to advance the values that have been most important in their lives – by providing a gift through their will. You can also continue the fight for justice, equality, and fairness for future generations.

Traditionally, estate planning can be expensive and time-consuming. That's why the ACLU is pleased to offer its supporters free access to Giving Docs. Here you can create your will and other estate planning documents in just a few minutes. And there is no obligation to leave a gift in order to create your will.

“All our lives, we wanted to do something that has an impact which will last beyond our lifetime — and that’s what a bequest gift to the ACLU can accomplish. We feel good knowing we share the same values and that their work will benefit not only our generation, but the next generation.”

FAQ

What is a will? +

Your last will and testament is a formal document that specifies your wishes when you pass away. If you do not have anything spelled out, the government will determine how your belongings, children, and pets are placed among your living family.

Is this will legally binding? +

Giving Docs advises that once you have had it witnessed and notarized it will be legally binding. Giving Docs will give you detailed instructions on how to do so in order to ensure that your will carries out your wishes. Giving Docs securely keeps your information in your profile so that you can quickly and easily update your will whenever you need to.

How much will it cost? +

This offer is free to you for life, compliments of the ACLU.

Is the ACLU preparing my will? +

No. While the ACLU covers the cost of providing this service to our supporters, Giving Docs is an independent third-party platform, completely separate from the ACLU. Its services are provided without review from ACLU, and ACLU is not liable for its use. Giving Docs is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Your use of the platform is subject to Giving Docs’ Terms of Service, which we encourage you to review.

Where is my will valid? +

Giving Docs advises that your will from Giving Docs is valid in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. If you live outside of the U.S., you may use the Giving Docs process to outline your wishes in preparation for speaking with an attorney.

Can I add other important organizations? +

Yes. Giving Docs makes it easy to leave gifts to all of your favorite organizations, but you are not required to leave a gift in order to create a will through Giving Docs.

How do I know if this is going to work for me? +

The standard will document you create on the Giving Docs website incorporates typical estate planning needs. If you have an estate with multiple properties and complex assets, or would like to discuss alternative ways of making a gift, we recommend consulting an attorney and/or financial advisor.

What other gift plans can I choose to make? +

Users of the platform can also choose to be guided through the process of naming a charity as the beneficiary of a retirement account, bank account, or other “transfer on death” beneficiary designation.

How is my data used? +

The ACLU does not share your personal information with Giving Docs. They only receive the information you provide to them, if you choose to activate a Giving Docs account. Giving Docs’ Terms of Service prohibit the sale or rental of user names or other personal information.

Am I committed to leaving a gift? +

You are not required to leave a gift to the ACLU or any other organization in order to create a will. And any bequest provision you include is revocable. It can be changed at any time for any reason. Simply log back into your account to update your will, and follow the instructions for signatures and notarizations.

How can this be offered at no cost to me? +

So many of the ACLU’s members choose to provide for a future gift that we’re able to offer Giving Docs for free to ACLU supporters.
