Career Opportunity: Paralegal
The ACLU Foundation of Southern California has an opening for a full-time Paralegal
to work with staff attorneys at the ACLU’s office in Los Angeles County.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and filing of a variety of legal documents, including
memoranda, pleadings, briefs, motions, court forms, petitions, subpoenas and
discovery documents;
- Assist with the distribution of documents to co-counsel and other parties
working in collaborations with attorneys;
- Telephone liaison with co-counsel and opposing counsel, clients, as well
as with committees to coordinate joint projects with volunteer attorneys and
staff attorneys;
- Face-to-face client interviews;
- Assist attorneys in developing cases;
- Contact clerks of the court, state and local agencies, etc. to obtain information;
- Compose routine correspondence;
- Assist attorneys with legal and other research, as requested, such as cite-checking,
telephoning sources of information, internet searches, using off-site libraries,
copying abstracts, cases, etc.
- Draft simple notices, declarations, requests and orders;
- Maintain files; coordinate attorneys' litigation schedules;
- Word processing.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of filing procedures and requirements for all courts, including
state, federal and courts of appeal;
- Minimum three years experience; paralegal certificate desirable;
- Excellent typing and proofing skills; WordPerfect for Windows required;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
- Ability to work well under pressure, including some evenings and weekends;
- Ability to set/change priorities according to deadline requirements;
- Ability to work well with others, in a collegial and diverse environment;
- Fluency in Spanish preferred;
- Experience with public interest organizations desirable but not required.
Compensation:
