JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
CHAPTER DIRECTOR - SUFFOLK COUNTY
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost
defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York
affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit,
nonpartisan organization with six chapters and 48,000 members statewide. We
are seeking a visionary individual with strong leadership skills; experience
in advocacy and organizing; excellent communication skills and a strong commitment
to civil liberties to lead our Suffolk County Chapter in Eastern Long Island.
The Chapter office is located in the Touro Law Center in Central Islip, New
York.
Summary of Position:
The Chapter Director organizes outreach, legal, educational and fundraising
functions under the direction of a local Chapter Board and the Executive Director
of the New York Civil Liberties Union. The position is based in suburban Suffolk
County, about 50 miles East of Manhattan. Salary is in the $40,000 range.
Position Responsibilities:
Intake:
- Respond to complaints from individuals with civil liberties or discrimination
problems. Coordinate action on behalf of those with an appropriate complaints,
which fall within our purview; these actions could include advocacy, public
education and assistance with legal representation or referral.
Outreach:
- Communicate and collaborate with other community groups on issues of mutual
concern.
- Outreach to legal community to recruit cooperating attorneys to assist on
legal matters.
- Serve as Chapter's spokesperson to the media, public and local government
bodies regarding civil liberties concerns, including but not limited to letters
to the editor, op ed pieces, attending public hearings and speaking at schools.
Fundraising and Membership:
- Coordinate development in conjunction with Chapter's Board.
Public Relations:
- Produce the Chapter's newsletters, press releases, and other literature
as needed.
Administration:
- Manage small office, keep regular office hours, recruit and supervise staff
and volunteers, staff local board meetings and assist in board development,
staff special events, forums and press conferences.
- Supervise interns with chapter's legal committee chair.
- Maintain relations and communicate with the State office. Submit executive
director and financial reports in a timely fashion and as directed.
- Develop familiarity with all NYCLU and ACLU policies and guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Applicants must be articulate, self motivated, and organized;
- Proficiency with technology (Microsoft Office) and 2 years professional
experience is highly desirable;
- Excellent writing and communications skills;
- Experience in working with youth, community advocacy and organizing;
- Demonstrated commitment to upholding civil liberties; and
- Ability to work independently is essential.
