EVENTS & PROGRAMS MANAGER
(Full-time)
The ACLU of Washington Foundation is a non-profit public interest organization
devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. Its staff of 30 employees
and numerous volunteers work in a fast-paced, friendly and professional office.
The Events and Program Manager is one of four staff members in the Communications
Department. The position produces a variety of annual events and manages a growing
student education project, outreach programs for young professionals, the Speaker
Bureau, and other communications projects. The position reports to the Communications
Director and works collaboratively with other staff members.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Events. Organize, manage, and execute yearly ACLU events, which currently
include the Annual Membership Conference, the Student Conference on Civil Liberties,
and occasional one-time events: Oversee the design, production and mailing of
invitations and materials, arrange for speakers and volunteers, handle facilities
arrangements, logistics, budget, and all the details of successful events. Assist
other staff with the production of the annual Bill of Rights Celebration Dinner.
The events manager will be working both independently and in collaboration with
other departments.
Student Education Project. Coordinate and expand outreach programs to
teachers and students: Maintain and expand statewide database of interested
educators and manage a distribution list for teachers. Produce conferences for
high school students and a daylong class for teachers, and work with Communications
Director on their content. Develop and maintain contacts with school groups,
and make presentations on resources available through the ACLU. Coordinate other
special projects for students and teachers, as assigned.
Speaker Program. Manage Speaker Bureau: Coordinate arrangements for
speaking engagements to school and community groups, organize trainings, and
assist in planning and evaluation. Promote and market Speaker Bureau to community
groups.
Young Professionals Programs. Help design as well as implement new activities
to increase involvement of post-college ACLU supporters and potential supporters
in their 20s & 30s. Coordinate productions of ACLU-sponsored events aimed
at younger adults. Arrange for ACLU presentations targeting younger adults at
law firms, tech companies, and community groups. Devise ways to increase appeal
to younger adults of regularly scheduled ACLU events.
Interns and Volunteers. Recruit, train, and supervise interns in the
Communications Department. Manage Communications Department volunteer involvement
with events.
Other responsibilities. Handle other projects related to advancing public
understanding of civil liberties as assigned. Attend ACLU events and occasional
community functions. Help ensure smooth and effective office operations. Assist
the Communications Director as needed, and work as a supportive team member
on Communications Department projects. Help maintain a positive, respectful,
welcoming, and professional work environment for employees and volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Significant experience in successful event management and in handling multiple
projects simultaneously. Strong ability to manage details and follow-through
for projects with a minimum of direct supervision.
- Strong interpersonal communications skills. Demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively with staff, volunteers, vendors, and Board members. Ability
to represent the ACLU effectively before the general public. Solid writing
skills for the preparation letters.
- Demonstrated administrative skills, including word processing, keeping organized
files, and problem solving. Experience in supervising volunteers and working
cooperatively with external groups.
- A confident, professional, and outgoing presentation. A history of reliability,
conscientiousness, and timeliness.
- Proven experience in juggling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
with frequent and concurrent deadlines. Willingness to take on new tasks as
the responsibilities of the position evolve.
- Strong support of the ACLU and familiarity with civil rights and civil liberties
issues.
- A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual

- Ability to work occasional overtime or irregular hours.
- Driver’s license and car.
- B.A. or equivalent and minimum two years of relevant, professional-level
work experience.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the ACLU
compensation scale. Excellent benefits package is provided.
