CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon/ACLU Foundation of Oregon (ACLU of Oregon) seeks a Campaign Director to manage the Oregon affiliate’s participation in the ACLU’s Nationwide campaign, “Leading Freedom Forward: The ACLU Campaign for the Future.”

The ACLU of Oregon is dedicated to advancing and defending the civil liberties principles found in the Bill of Rights of the Oregon and U.S. Constitutions through litigation, lobbying, public education and communications. The Oregon ACLU has more than 17,000 members, the highest per capita membership of any affiliate. The annual budget is approximately $1 million. Its main office is in Portland, with a satellite office in Eugene. This position will be in the Portland office. This is a temporary position lasting the duration of the campaign (approximately 3 years).

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The Oregon affiliate of the ACLU is one of 14 affiliates that is actively participating in a nationwide campaign to transform civil liberties. The campaign has both national and local elements.

The Campaign Director’s primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Direct campaign activities and implement campaign plans;
  • Organize and support the board members, staff and other prominent supporters who will provide critical leadership to the campaign, including training, scheduling and providing support materials;
  • Develop major donor stewardship efforts, including donor correspondence and contact, cultivation events, and other contacts for the campaign;
  • Create and manage campaign committees comprised of staff, board and philanthropic leaders to ensure that plans are implemented, goals achieved, timely reports generated and information shared;
  • Solicit donors for campaign contributions, when and where appropriate;
  • Collaborate with the national office to develop and produce an external marketing strategy aimed at major donors, ACLU members and other potential donors;
  • Prepare personalized proposals for individual campaign prospects and write cultivation and solicitation correspondence;
  • Help design and oversee a comprehensive donor recognition program for all campaign contributions;
  • Develop and maintain financial tracking systems for all campaign contributions;
  • Develop administrative policies and procedures for receiving, tracking, reporting and acknowledging campaign gifts;
  • Ensure that all campaign donors receive timely and accurate reports on the use of their gifts and campaign progress;
  • Work in collaboration with the national ACLU and affiliate colleagues to enhance the effectiveness of the campaign;
  • Work with other development department programs to coordinate donor stewardship activities.

The Campaign Director will report to the Development Director and be part of the Development team. In addition, the Campaign Director will work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers and consultants to coordinate the Oregon affiliate’s participation in the Nationwide Campaign.

Required Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission and programs of ACLU, with a broad appreciation for and a sensitivity to the culture and traditions of the organization;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required, with at least five years of proven experience in development;
  • A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors for major gifts;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to manage multiple deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about and understand cultures other than one’s own;
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with donors, volunteers, staff and Board members, and a commitment to the highest ethical standards;
  • Experience with donor database management and systems to track the Campaign and ensure complete donor and Campaign records;
  • Ability to travel;
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours;

Helpful Skills & Experience:

  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE);
  • Experience with capital and planned gifts desirable;
  • Experience working with electronic media including websites, blogs, etc.;
  • Experience working with people of races, religions and national origin other than one’s own.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience, including health, life, disability, retirement, and other benefits;
