NOTICE OF ASSOCIATE LEGAL DIRECTOR OPENING
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION OF FLORIDA

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida (“ACLU”), a statewide affiliate of the National ACLU, is adding an Associate Legal Director to its State office in Miami.

The ACLU of Florida works in the courts, legislatures and, through public education programs, in communities to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and civil rights laws.

The ACLU litigates a broad range of constitutional cases in federal and state courts including, but not limited to, free speech, freedom of religion (both Establishment and Free Exercise cases), lesbian and gay rights, equal protection, civil rights, 4th Amendment protections, and privacy rights. The ACLU litigates through direct representation and by filing amicus briefs. Advocacy is not limited to the courts as the ACLU engages in public education and communication campaigns and works in coalition with other Florida organizations on civil rights / civil liberties issues.

Job Description: The Associate Legal Director will primarily be responsible for assisting the Legal Director in the administration of the statewide legal program, including supervision of legal staff and the development of ACLU cases. He or she will be involved in direct litigation as well as working with cooperating attorneys and ACLU staff attorneys throughout the State and will be called upon to assist in any of the day to day issues handled by the ACLU. While the Associate Legal Director will work closely with the Legal Director, he or she will have a great deal of autonomy and will be expected to work independently. The Associate Legal Director will also be expected to have or develop expertise in reproductive freedom issues and direct the litigation of the ACLU of Florida’s Reproductive Freedom Project.

Qualifications: Applicants must be admitted to practice law in the State of Florida and have at least ten years of relevant legal experience. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in, and demonstrated commitment to, civil rights and civil liberties and public interest law. In addition, the ideal applicant will have had experience indicating successful mentoring and supervising of more junior attorneys or the skills indicating the ability to mentor and supervise other attorneys. Applicants must be self-motivated, able to work with a minimum amount of supervision, and capable of complex analytical work. Applicants must possess excellent research and writing skills as well as good communications skills. A familiarity with civil liberties issues and a commitment to the goals of the ACLU in defending and advancing civil liberties are essential.

Salary and Benefits: Salary is comparable to other public interest law firms in the area and will be set depending upon experience (minimum $65,000 with ten years experience). The ACLU provides excellent benefits including health and dental insurance with generous vacation, holiday and sick leave policies.

Application Process: Please send résumé and cover letter (e-mail preferred) by June 15, 2008, to:
