LEGAL ADVOCACY COORDINATOR
ACLU FOUNDATION OF TEXAS
OVERVIEW:
The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas (ACLU) invites
applications for a Legal Advocacy Coordinator. The Advocacy
Coordinator will be an integral member of the entire organization and will attend
regular staff meetings. The ACLU is one of the nation's foremost defenders of
civil liberties and civil rights. We are a nonpartisan organization dedicated
to defending the Bill of Rights through litigation, legislation, and public
education. The Texas affiliate of the ACLU, founded in 1938, is headquartered
in Austin, and includes a regional office in Houston and thirteen chapters with
more than 17,000 members statewide.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain the intake system to respond to requests for legal assistance.
- Investigate complaints.
- Assist with client and witness interviews.
- Draft affidavits and other legal documents.
- Draft reports and collaborate with the public education department.
- Help maintain legal department-related portions of the ACLU website.
- Cite-check briefs and memoranda.
- Conduct Internet and other factual research.
- Prepare background memoranda on selected policy issues.
- Provide assistance and guidance to the Legal Assistant.
- Recruit, supervise and train law students, volunteers and interns.
- Attend and promote the Legal Program at public interest law school events.
- Provide Case Management; serve as primary contact for plaintiffs; coordinate
logistics of plaintiff events
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of paralegal or related experience
is preferred.
- Excellent research and writing skills.
- Proficiency in a Windows XP environment, especially Word, Excel, and the
Internet.
- Experience using FileMaker database and Microsoft PowerPoint
- Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented.
- Must be self motivated and able to work independently as well as within
a team.
- Commitment to assisting the ACLU in its mission to defend civil rights and
civil liberties.
- A demonstrated interest in human rights and civil liberties issues is preferred.
- Spanish-speaking and writing ability preferred.
- Ability to work long hours and some weekends, as requested.
COMPENSATION:
The ACLU Foundation of Texas offers a salary commensurate with experience and
a generous and comprehensive benefits package including employer-paid medical
