ACLU Lawsuit Challenges Grossly Inadequate Conditions At Canyon County Jail (1/9/2009) BOISE, ID – The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Idaho today filed a class-action federal lawsuit challenging the indecent, cruel and inhumane conditions that exist at the Dale G. Haile Detention Center, one of three structures that comprise the Canyon County Jail in Caldwell, Idaho.
Supreme Court Agrees To Hear Voting Rights Act Challenge (1/9/2009) WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court agreed today to hear an appeal brought by a small municipal utility district in Austin, Texas challenging a key section of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the landmark federal law that ensured African-Americans access to voting booths across the South. The American Civil Liberties Union represents an African-American voter who lives in Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One, the jurisdiction that brought the challenge. A number of civil rights organizations are also participating in the lawsuit.
Court Closes Avenue For Guantánamo Detainees To Challenge Their Detention (1/9/2009) NEW YORK – A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit today closed an avenue for Guantánamo Bay detainees to challenge their detention, shutting down approximately 175 pending cases in that court. The court struck down a provision of the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 that allowed detainees to challenge their status as "enemy combatants" as determined by the Pentagon’s Combatant Status Review Tribunals, a status that allows for their indefinite detention at Guantánamo.
ACLU Calls For End To Inhumane Force-Feeding Of Guantánamo Prisoners (1/9/2009) NEW YORK – In light of recent media reports that 25 hunger striking detainees at Guantánamo are being force-fed through tubes in their noses, the American Civil Liberties Union sent an urgent letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates urging him to end the inhumane and unlawful practice. The letter asks Secretary Gates to allow independent medical professionals to review and monitor the status of hunger-striking detainees in a manner consistent with international ethical standards and to order authorities at the detention facility to revise any procedure that authorizes force-feeding of detainees.
Justice Department Releases Several Legal Memos On Bush Administration's War Policies (1/9/2009) NEW YORK – In the final days of the Bush administration, the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) released several memos that provide the legal basis for some of the president's war policies. However, the Justice Department continues to withhold many legal opinions, including memos justifying torture and surveillance policies that are responsive to Freedom of Information Act lawsuits filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
