Silent Candlelight Protest – Six Years of Injustice

Silent Protest. Dressed in orange jumpsuits we’ll create a candlelit tableau of chained prisoners before marching slowly and silently in chains down Market Street, stopping at crowded plazas and corners (e.g., BART stations) to re-create our tableau. We’ll end in Justin Hermann Plaza and form our final tableau beside the ice skating rink there.
If possible, please wear an orange jumpsuit OR wear orange OR black if you can’t find orange clothing.

The Central Region office of the ACLU of Florida and the Central Chapter are organizing an event to coincide with the Jan. 11 call to Close Guantanamo. Our group is meeting at Senator Bill Nelson’s Orlando office at 4PM on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 to demand that the Guantanamo prison be shut down. Clad in orange, we will hand deliver demand letters to the offices of Senator Nelson (D), Senator Mel Martinez (R), and US Rep. Ric Keller (R). By 5PM, we will march from these offices to the corner of ORANGE AVE to continue our event with tabling and a street-side demonstration in Downtown Orlando.

If possible, wear orange jump suits over warm clothes or carry them. Assemble at the ACLU of Massachusetts, 12:15 PM. Start procession at 12:30 PM. Reach JFK Building by 1 PM. Then march in procession back to the ACLU office.

Rev. N.J. L’Heureux, Executive Director of Queens Federation of Churches and outspoken minister against torture. There will be a report from Brooklyn where Puerto Rican activists have received subpoenas to appear also on January 11 in what represents an important case of grand jury repression.

Help us send the message to Washington and the world that Oregonians want our constitution restored, due process for people held by our government and Guantánamo closed down!
Want to help with the rally? We need “detainees” to wear orange jumpsuits and black hoods (which will be provided). Help us make a dramatic visual statement by joining the “detainee” line up. January 11, 2008, marks the six year anniversary of the first arrival of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay. Join the the Nationwide Day of Action to Close Guantánamo!
The demonstration in support of the closure of Guantánamo. The demonstration will begin with a vigil in front of the Federal Courthouse, 6th & Market Sts., where the names of Guantánamo prisoners will be read while people chained together wearing black hoods and orange jump suits will stand. The “prisoners” will then will be “pulled” in a procession with banners, signs, and bell-tolling through the historic district of Philadephia, past the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and concluding in front of the National Constitution Center.
