People Power is the ACLU's platform for grassroots action, where volunteers like you mobilize communities across the country to defend and advance civil liberties and civil rights for all. 

Thank you for your interest in joining our efforts to advance civil liberties as a volunteer with American Civil Liberties Union, Inc., American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, Inc., and your local affiliate (collectively referred to here as “ACLU Organizations”). By signing up with us, you'll be able to join our network of activists and fight for civil liberties. Before you get started, here are a couple things to note: 

Because you may have access to confidential information and/or may be serving in a leadership role in our volunteer programs, we seek to ensure we have shared expectations. Please use this as a resource regarding your role and responsibilities, and feel free to contact us at info@peoplepower.org with any questions.

Volunteer Status

As a volunteer, you are the lifeblood of our grassroots organizing programs. Please note:

• You are a volunteer and not an employee or independent contractor of the ACLU Organizations
• As a volunteer, you will not be paid a salary, stipend, or fees, nor will you receive any employee benefits.
• Your service is voluntary, but the impact is powerful and enduring.

Confidentiality

In the course of your volunteer work with us, you may receive or have access to non-public information and data about the ACLU Organizations, and its affiliated entities, including:

• personal information about volunteers, donors and others,
• information about planned ACLU Organizations campaigns and other initiatives, and
• passwords necessary to access ACLU Organizations' information (all of which is referred to as “Confidential Information”). Information available within or from the Volunteer Management System (“VMS”) is Confidential Information.

This information is considered Confidential Information, and by volunteering, you agree to:

• Use or disclose Confidential Information only as directed by the Organizing Team and only within platforms provided by the ACLU Organizations
• Never use or disclose Confidential Information for personal or external purposes
• Never retain or download Confidential Information to your own or non-ACLU Organization-provided devices
• Immediately notify the Organizing Team of any suspected or actual unauthorized access or disclosure

Non-Partisanship

The ACLU Organizations are non-partisan organizations and do not endorse or oppose candidates for elected or appointed office. 

The ACLU Organizations may share information with voters about issues and candidates' policy positions and records that you may be asked to share while volunteering. Please do not alter that content or the specific instructions you are given for its distribution. With regard to ballot measures, the ACLU sometimes advocates for the passage or defeat of a particular ballot measure, and you may be asked to do so while volunteering.

When speaking as a volunteer with the ACLU Organizations:

• Please identify yourself as an ACLU volunteer (or a volunteer with a specific ACLU campaign) and not as a staff member;
• Please stay within the talking points and other guidelines you have been given; 
• If you are asked a question about any ACLU Organization position on an issue not covered by those guidelines, refer the questioner to ACLU Organization staff or to the appropriate ACLU Organization website.

When speaking for yourself outside of ACLU Organization grassroots programs (i.e., in conducting activities in your personal capacity that are unrelated to your ACLU Organization volunteer activities, including on social media):

• Please do not identify yourself as speaking for or on behalf of any ACLU Organizations, and
• Please do not use any ACLU Organization name or logo.
