ACLU Comments on SNAP

Document Date: April 10, 2018

The ACLU submitted these comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in response to an advance notice of proposed rulemaking, ‘Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Requirements and Services for Able-Bodied Adults without Dependents.’ The comments express concerns with proposed changes to time limit and eligibility restrictions with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), with respect to people reentering society, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, and women. The letter outlines the role SNAP plays in the lives of people in these populations, and the impact changes would have on them, and expresses opposition to any administrative action by USDA that would cut more people off SNAP or force more people to navigate harsh and unnecessary program rules. The letter also urges USDA to support state efforts and flexibility to ensure these populations have access to work training, employment, and SNAP eligibility.
