ACLU Statement on NO BAN Act

Document Date: January 29, 2020

In this letter to Congress, the ACLU urged Members of Congress to support H.R. 2214, the NO BAN Act. The NO BAN Act would repeal President Trump’s Muslim ban, asylum ban, and refugee ban, and make necessary reforms to immigration law to prevent future discriminatory bans. This bill is a significant step forward for Muslim communities as well as other communities that could be targeted discriminatorily or without good reason. It is essential that the legislation remain intact—without changes—so this authority cannot be used to ban whole communities in order to protect all communities against discrimination.

The ACLU also joined a coalition of civil rights and liberties organizations, immigration organizations, and community-based organizations committed to protecting the rights of Muslim, Arab, Iranian, Middle Eastern, and South Asian communities in conveying this message to Congress.
