ACLU Vote Recommendation Urging House to Vote “NO” on Rep. Blackburn Amendment No. 21 to H.R. 5485, the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act of 2017

Document Date: July 6, 2016

This ACLU vote recommendation urges the House of Representatives to vote against an amendment from Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) to H.R. 5485, the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act of 2017, which would defund implementation of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) proposed rule on broadband internet provider privacy. The proposed rule seeks to protect consumer privacy with regards to information that is obtained, used, and shared by their broadband internet access (BIAS) providers (i.e. companies that provide broadband internet, such as Verizon or Comcast). The ACLU supports the FCC proposal to apply the traditional privacy protections of the Communications Act to BIAS providers to protect consumer privacy in the digital age.
