In this letter, the ACLU urges members of the Senate and House of Representatives and to cosponsor the VoteSafe Act (S. 3725/H.R. 6807), and for Congress to either pass it as a freestanding bill or include its provisions in the next COVID-19 relief package. The bill is limited to address the impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 elections. It sets baseline federal standards applicable only to the 2020 elections, requiring no-excuse mail-in absentee voting and early in-person voting periods of at least 20 days, and provides $5 billion in funding necessary to ensure Americans can vote safely and freely. Polling consistently makes clear that Americans, regardless of party affiliation, broadly support the availability of expanded and safe voting options during the pandemic.
