The ACLU sent this statement of continued opposition to S. 1693, the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act of 2017, to the Senate Commerce committee in advance of a markup of the legislation. The proposed Manager’s Amendment makes significant improvements to the bill, but the underlying framework remains flawed – continuing to pose risks to online communications and being contrary to bipartisan criminal justice reform principles while doing little to ease the plight of trafficking victims.
