This September 20, 2017 coalition letter, signed by the ACLU, raises serious concerns over proposed legislation that would provide a new process for cross-border access by foreign governments to electronic data in the United States. The proposed bill would allow certain foreign governments to bypass the current process for obtaining legal assistance from the U.S. and would permit U.S. communications providers to respond directly to foreign government requests for stored data and even allow companies to conduct wiretaps for foreign governments in some cases.
