This letter was sent by 33 U.S. Senators to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on June 1, 2015, calling on the Secretary to "end the practice of presumptive detention of families" and to only use detention as "a last resort, when there is a serious public safety or flight risk that cannot be mitigated by alternatives to detention."
