ACLU Statement on House Passage of NO BAN Act

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives today passed HR 1333, the NO BAN Act. The legislation, which is endorsed by the American Civil Liberties Union, sets a higher standard for the use of presidential authority to suspend or restrict entry to the United States and prevent future discriminatory bans.

Manar Waheed, senior legislative and advocacy counsel for the ACLU, said:

“Today’s House passage of the NO BAN Act is a hard-won victory for Muslims, Africans, African Muslims, and all other immigrants of color. It is a critical step toward immigration policies that are guided by fairness, constitutional rights, and human dignity, rather than racism and discrimination. The Muslim ban was a prime example of the Trump administration’s poisonous racism that tore families apart, targeted Black and Brown immigrants, and trampled on our most fundamental constitutional rights. It is now on the Senate to pass this critical legislation to prevent future discrimination against Black and Brown immigrants or any other community that might be unjustly targeted. ”

Last year the ACLU led over 200 civil rights and civil liberties, immigrants’ rights, human rights, and community-based organizations in urging members of Congress to support the NO BAN Act. That letter is available here.
